rainWhen I got to work this afternoon, it was pouring rain. Figurative cats and dogs, if you will. I am not a big fan of umbrellas and I rather like the rain. So, although I keep an umbrella in my car, I never bother to take it out. I just hopped out of the car and walked the block to work in the pouring rain. I was wet as could be when I arrived (my sweatshirt is finally dry 4.5 hours later) but I didn't care because it just doesn't bother me.
On this particular day, I noticed something. People (mostly women, though there was this one guy....) will do the dumbest things when it rains. I saw an unbelievable number of people who were running from one doorway to another across campus with a notebook over their heads. You know the general size of a single spiral bound notebook, right? Not huge. Really, holding this a couple inches over your head pretty much serves to tire out your arm muscles and nothing else. I mean, come on! Does it really matter so much if the top of your head stays somewhat dry when the rest of you is soaked?
Seriously, I saw tons of people doing this--and I bet you've seen it too--using newspapers, folders, one guy with a textbook. If they at least held it in front of their foreheads, like a visor, to keep the rain out of the face area, that I could understand. But this is always directly over the head, mimicking an umbrella.
What are people thinking? Could there be a more absurd reaction to rain? Because what is the worst that can happen...
"You cursed brat! Look what you've done! I'm melting! Melting! Oh, what a world, what a world! Who would've thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? I'm gone! I'm gone! I'm going!"
...alright, I guess there could be some repercussions.
